Project Scope: Reality check

As the project progressed, we encountered challenges related to hardware integration, time constraints, and the complexity of real-time energy management. Developing a full-scale system, including all EV charger modules, communication protocols, central computing, and full energy flow regulation, proved to be too ambitious within the academic context and available resources.

Instead, the team concentrated on building and demonstrating the core functionalities of the system:

  • A working communication flow between a charger and a central unit.

  • Basic control of power allocation based on simulated data.

  • Demonstration of the prioritisation logic based on battery charge levels.

This proof of concept successfully showcases the main ideas and technical feasibility of the project, and lays the groundwork for future development. It highlights the system’s potential to manage EV charging dynamically and fairly, even if it doesn’t yet operate at full scale.

The experience gained throughout this process was valuable in understanding the real-world challenges of smart grid systems, and the project still serves its primary academic and innovation goals.
